TRANSFORMA LAB

Transforma Lab is an artistic project built on a curatorial approach involving a new event that will contribute towards the regeneration of the Torres Vedras historical center. Based on the recreation of memories and meanings, and the analysis of the singularity of the connections and nature of the sites, the developing stages of the project will research, experiment, and promote new forms of rethinking the city. Its aim is also to stimulate the development of creative work that undertakes practices and forms that establish connections with the public space, urban landscape and the social fabric of the city. This project is part of the IMAGINE2020, Art and Climate Change Network, an European project that supports artistic work researching the causes and effects of climate change while promoting promotes sustainable development, with the ultimate goal of changing the cultural sector and society at large. Transforma Lab is also done in collaboration with the Oporto Faculty of Fine Arts Master Art & Design for the Public Space study programme, in an attempt to promote new developments achieved through their “Transformations” project.
The project was presented in Torres Vedras between 17 and 22 October 2011.

The study programme grants the Master of Art & Design for the Public Space and is aimed at students trained in varied Art and/or Design courses, at this or other Faculties. The course offers alternatives for further education within a scope of research that aims to intervene in the public space in a social, political, urban or virtual approach. The need for interaction and involvement with the public domain has been progressively affirming itself as an artistic, aesthetic and creative concern within diverse circuits of knowledge and artistic practice. Internationally, this territory already has a considerable implementation, both at an academic level and as a professional practice, in Portugal the offer of a 2nd Cycle course with this profile allows for an approach that conveys operative skills and reflexive tools adequate to address said territory. Thus, on the one hand, the character of expertise of the programme of studies addresses very specific needs of the spatial intervention operativeness; on the other, its pluri and interdisciplinary roots establish from the outset a focus on developing critical and reflexive tools.
The current Masters allows further education for graduate students holding a Degree from any of the Pathways of the Art or Design Courses in this Faculty, but also for graduate students coming from areas of study such as Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscaping, Product Design. The course celebrates co-operation with other Faculties and Research Centres, namely CCRE (Centre for Spatial Representation) at the Architecture Faculty of Porto, with the aim of furthering scientific dialogue and enabling groundwork for thinking and acting upon the city, the landscape, the community and the museum, in a multidisciplinary mode.

FBAUP

The Faculty of Fine Arts is located on the eastern area of Porto, just a few minutes walk from the city centre, in an old palace of the 19th century. In the 50s several buildings with architectural relevance were constructed on its garden, which were specifically planned to teach the common Fine Arts course units. The applicants to the Faculty of Fine Arts may choose among the degrees in Painting, Sculpture and Communication Design. All of them take five years. All these degrees have a strong emphasis on basic knowledge in Drawing and History of Art, in accordance with the educational patterns in Fine Arts. However the curricula reforms taking place over the years have ensured that teaching techniques and methods are kept up to date. This also ensures a training which is compatible with the demands of the contemporary artistic situation. The work carried out by the teaching staff is often complemented by invited guests: plastic artists, designers, art critics, art gallery directors and many others who contribute to the training of young artists. Study visits and workshops are also an important part of the school activities. At the level of post-graduate studies the FBAUP offers Master Degrees in Multimedia, in Drawing and Printmaking, in Sculpture, in Painting, in Contemporary Artistic Practices, in Teaching of Visual Arts for Teachers of the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and of Secondary Education, in Image Design, in Graphic Design and Editorial Projects, in Art Studies and in Art and Design for Public Space. Several elements of the teaching staff are responsible for orienting or co-orienting PhDs in the fields of Painting, Sculpture, Drawing, Communication Design and Art Sciences and Geometry.
